Marriage License Identification

State Marriage law requires verification of each applicant’s identity and age to obtain a marriage application. Valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, passport, military identification) is required. In some jurisdiction, a certified birth certificate and/or social security numbers are requested.

• • Alabama: All individuals applying for a marriage license must present TWO forms of identification.
  • • Alaska: A Picture ID, such as a driver’s license, is required. If the application is mailed or faxed in, it must be witnessed by a Notary Public.
    • • Arizona: Proper identification for proof of age such as: goverment issued photo ID, or passport.
      • • Arkansas: Must present a valid government issued photo identification; such as a driver’s license, passport or military identification.
        • • California: Show a valid state identification, driver’s license, passport, certified birth certificate, baptismal record and photo I.D., or alien resident card proving that you are over 18 years of age.
          • • Colorado: Valid identification must be furnished by both parties date of birth must be legible.
            • • Connecticut: Valid government issued photo identification is required.
              • • Delaware: Applicants are required to show a valid photo identification.
                • • District of Columbia: Valid identification and proof of age of both parties is required in the form of driver’s license, government-issued non-driver’s identification, or passport.
                  • Florida: Valid photo identification issued by the state or federal government with the applicant’s correct legal name, signature, and birth date.
                  • Georgia: Both parties must appear with two forms of identification: Valid driver’s license, passport, military I.D. (picture identification) AND original or certified copy of birth certificate.
                  • Hawaii: Both applicant’s must show proof of age. A certified copy of a birth certificate must be presented for anyone 18 years of age or under. A valid photo I.D. or driver’s license may be presented for anyone 19 years of age or over.
                  • Idaho: One of the following is required as proof of identity and age: current driver’s license, state-issued identification card, passport, original birth certificate or certified copy.
                  • Illinois: Both applicants must present identification and proof of age. Valid government issued photo identification is required.
                  • Indiana: Both applicants must be present at the time of application with a valid driver’s license or a state identification card, for proof of residency, identity, and date of birth.
                  • Iowa: Government issued photo identification is required for both marriage parties AND witness
                  • Kansas: Applicants are required to show government-issued photo identification as proof of identity. SSN’s are requested.
                  • Kentucky: Both applicants must present an acceptable form of identification, such as a driver’s license, government issued picture identification, or passport.
                  • Louisiana: Both applicants must present valid and unexpired identification.
                  • Maine: Proof of identity (government issued picture identification, or passport) must be provided to the clerk at the time of filing.
                  • Maryland: Either party may apply in person. Photo identification is required.
                  • • Massachusetts: Picture identification is required, such as a driver’s license. You may be required to show a certified birth certificate. You should know your Social Security numbers.
                    • • Michigan: Photo Identification (Driver’s License, state issued ID, or Passport) is required. You should know your Social Security numbers.
                      • • Minnesota: A current valid ID is required to apply. Social security numbers are required on the application form. If you do not have a social security number, you will be required to certify that on the application form.
                        • • Mississippi: If you are applying for yourself, or you are applying for someone else as their spouse, you must provide valid photo identification.
                          • Missouri: The law requires the Recorder of Deeds to verify each applicant’s identity and age. Verification is done in person.
